Move Towards Maturity
G.K. Chesterton once said, "The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid." Hebrews 5:11-14 says,
"We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, still being an infant, is not acquainted with the teachings about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." (emphasis mine)
There is something to be said about moving from the elementary truths of God's word, which is the understanding of the Gospel and out salvation, to more mature things about discerning right from wrong and actually living by it.
Many Christians today walk around boasting about how mature they are while still holding their spiritual bottle. It's time for us to put away childish things and move towards maturity "by constant use" of God's word. Then, and only then, will we be able to "distinguish good from evil."
